According to a recent New York Times survey of full-time metropolitan area employees age 50 or older, the most desirable perk is flexible work hours followed by part-time work. That's what they said would be most attractive to entice them to continue working as they reach senior status and enter retirement age.
While commonly thought to be "a mommy issue" (and maybe "a daddy issue"), flex-time is being more openly sought by workers at all stages of their career cycle, and, clearly, into their "senior statesmen" years. The demographic picture for the coming years strongly indicates that older, experienced workers will be needed and firms will need to make a serious effort to retain them. Perhaps pressure from seniors will finally cause firms to re-think work patterns.
